36 years ago, on March 31, a memorial stone was laid in the center of Yerevan, which was blessed personally by the Catholicos of All Armenians, the late Vazgen I, announcing that after a break of decades, a new sanctuary would be built in the newly independent country, which had thrown off the yoke of atheism. The foundation ceremony was performed by His Holiness Karekin I, and the opening and consecration were performed by His Holiness Karekin II, the Catholicos of All Armenians. It was under his care that numerous problems were overcome during the construction of the cathedral and the mother church of the capital was erected in the center of Yerevan.
